There are a lot of things to consider when packing for a move. It can be a daunting task. The sheer volume of our belongings is one consideration, the variety of those items is another. We have heavy, unbreakable items such as books, and delicate, very breakable items such as drinking glasses, cups, plates and other pieces of china.
As is the case with any project, planning is the key to success. How many boxes will you need? What size? One rule of thumb is that for every 3 room home you might need: 15 Medium Boxes (16 x 12 5/8 x 12 5/8), 8 Large Boxes (18 x 18 x 18), 8 X-Large Boxes (24 x 18 x 18), 4 Wardrobe Boxes – Full Size (24 x 21 x 48) Sizes are approximate.
Professional movers suggest you pack no more than 50 pounds per box to make it easier to move.
Start with your heaviest items. You will be stacking your packed boxes and the heavy boxes need to be on the bottom so as not to crush lighter items underneath. Pack similar items in a box whenever possible. This will make it much easier when it’s time to unpack.
While some people advocate using discarded boxes for moving, the problem with that is that there is the time and gasoline expense of finding and picking them up. Also, not all cardboard boxes are constructed well enough to stand up to the rigors of a move.
Remember too that in addition to boxes, you will need packing tape, a tape dispenser, a marking pen, twine and labels for the boxes.
